Recommended reading for ages 4-7years
I love finding books that introduce a new idea to my daughter and offer her a visual representation of a concept. That’s exactly what ‘A Big Mooncake for a Little Star’ does. On the surface, this is a sweet story about a little girl who can’t resist sneaking out of bed each night to nibble on the Mooncake she lovingly made with her Mother but each night as the Mooncake disappears a bit, the illustrations offer a representation of the different phases of the moon. Grace Lin first wrote this book after her daughter pointed out that there were not enough stories about the Chinese fall moon festival. Lin wrote the book with the Moon festival in mind, but I’m bringing this book out in time for the Chinese New Year which begins on Tuesday, February 1 during the second new moon. Recently, the early evening darkness has given me a wonderful chance to point out the moon with my daughter, and finding it hiding between the buildings on our walk is a new favorite game. Reading this book together will help connect the moon we see in the sky, and the celebrations taking place throughout downtown. I love the layers of this book, first teaching about the love of a mother and her daughter, then about the beauty in the stars and the phases of the moon, and lastly about the wonder of ancient Chinese-inspired storytelling.
