Book Review: Last Stop on Market Street

Recommended for ages: 3 - 5 years

The book ‘Last Stop on Market Street’ by Matt De La Pena fits into the category of ‘ordered online within hours of returning it to the library’. Simply put, we missed this book once it was gone. This sweet story is about a little boy who rides the city bus with his Grandmother every Sunday on their way to a special destination. During their ride, they have a lovely conversation about the things you see and the people you meet on the bus. I’m always looking to add books to our shelves that offer representations of real life. I want books that show the beautiful diversity of city living. The surprise for me in this book was not that it showcased a variety of races and ages, but also in a variety of economic status. What is no surprise is that this book has a large list of awards including the 2016 Newbery Medal. The poetic storytelling of this book is enhanced by the illustrations in a way I haven’t seen in awhile. Add this book to your bookshelf and I promise you won’t be sorry.
