Book Review: Wonder

Although Wonder by R. J. Palacio ended up on my lap accidentally, it was definitely worth the pounding headache that comes from reading a 315-page book in two or three hours. As a gift from a friend, it wasn’t even opened until a few months later, while I was cleaning. Cleaning my room isn’t exactly my most favorite activity, so I was thrilled when a, supposedly, good book literally turned up in my hands. And, wow, did it deliver. In 2017, it was made into a movie (that I haven’t yet seen), and multiple editions have been published.

Wonder is the story of August Pullman, who was born with rare facial differences. These differences make it hard for Auggie to go to school until his parents finally decide to let him go to a public school for fifth grade. Auggie is bullied and treated unfairly because of the way he looks. It’s a wonderful, well-written story that has a lesson everyone should learn. I love so many other things about this book; the short chapters, the style of writing, the characters… The list goes on!
