Ready for a blast of retro fun the whole family can enjoy? PAC-MAN is turning 45, and The Paley Center for Media is celebrating the legendary game with a hands-on experience that’s equal parts nostalgia and kid-approved play.

PAC-MAN first hit arcades in 1980 and quickly became a pop culture icon. Forty-five years later, kids are discovering it for the first time while parents get a serious throwback moment. This special exhibit brings PAC-MAN’s story to life in a way that works for all ages, no gaming expertise required.

One of the biggest highlights? Playing the classics. Families can step up to classic arcade cabinets and jump straight into PAC-MAN gameplay, no quarters required. As you explore, you’ll travel through PAC-MAN’s 45-year journey with a colorful timeline filled with milestones, fun facts, and behind-the-scenes stories.

Curious how a simple maze game became revolutionary? Behind the Maze takes you inside the original game design, showing early sketches and ideas that helped shape one of the most famous games ever created. The exhibit also goes big on visuals. On the screen, families can watch iconic PAC-MAN cartoons, a 45th Anniversary sizzle reel, and gameplay footage spanning decades. It’s a great way to show kids how gaming has evolved over time.

You can also spot rare PAC-MAN artifacts along the way, including the original Atari 2600 PAC-MAN box, a metal lunchbox from 1981, vintage collectibles, and even PAC-MAN: The Card Game. Plus, there’s a family arts and crafts station, where kids can create their own PAC-MAN–inspired masterpieces.

If you are looking for a family-friendly indoor activity in NYC, this PAC-MAN anniversary celebration at The Paley Center checks all the boxes: interactive, nostalgic, creative, and just plain fun. Waka waka your way through Midtown, you don’t want to miss it.
