Mystery Room NYC recently opened their doors in Soho. They also have a midtown location. Both locations have two mystery rooms ranging in levels of difficulty. The rooms are great to build teamwork, have a fun birthday experience or even if you are looking for something fun to do. You could also plan a unique family experience. Kids eight and above can easily join in the fun. The company is New York's most kid and family-friendly escape room venue.

Mystery Room NYC currently has four mystery rooms or four chapters from a storyline based on the case of a missing scientist, Dr. Edward Daniels - Biotech Labs, Cafe Belim, The Forgotten Library and The Secluded Vault. The rooms do not need to be played in order. The chapters of the story are nonlinear and players learn more of the overall story as they play more rooms.

Once you are in your mystery room, the game host will brief your team on the room’s background and then lock you’ll in with a timer on a screen. Your team then has one hour to unravel the secrets of the room. The team needs to find a series of clues till they reach the final clue to escape the room. The game host watches you’ll play from outside and will flash clues on the screen in case the team needs it. The question is, can you’ll escape?

Mystery Room NYC is designed by a High School biology teacher, Eric Siu. We got the opportunity to ask him a couple of questions.

Eric, could you tell our readers a little about yourself. How did you come up with the idea of creating the mystery rooms?

I'm a High School Biology teacher, teaching full time. A group of friends and I came up with the idea to create Mystery Room NYC because we had played one and it didn't match our expectation of what the game should be. When we design games, we think about how and why the players would need to work together. We don't want trivial knowledge so that all players can engage with the game. Any knowledge will be learned within the game itself. As a teacher, I always think about how to scaffold the game so that players will not simply get stuck and idle around, that there is always something that they can do to progress.

As it is a relatively new concept in NY, did you have any difficulty getting players? How long does it take you to create each room?

We often have players that may have heard of an Escape the Room game, but are not sure what it is. It usually takes us six or more months to design and plan for a room before we even start building it. We hope that our game principles continue to pull players in and continue to give people an alternate way to have fun with others.

We highly recommend challenging yourself to a game. Learn more about the escape rooms on www.mysteryroomnyc.com.
