Breaking Down Disney’s Moderate Resorts

By Jade Monzo, Owner, Rope Drop Travel April 20, 2021

When planning your Disney vacation there are many factors to take into account when deciding the Disney Resort to call home during your stay. Going for the most cost-effective one, will land you in the value resorts, but that will come with smaller rooms and usually more kids and noise to contend with; and while the deluxe resorts will immerse you in luxury, you’ll certainly be at a higher price point. Most families find themselves somewhere in the middle and go for Disney’s moderate resorts as you will find better amenities than a value resort but still with a reasonable price tag. You will find the theming at Disney’s moderate resorts to be more subtle and elegant in comparison to Disney’s over the top theming at their value resorts. You’ll also find most rooms will sleep five and offer queen size beds; in comparison to value resorts which only sleep 4 and offer double beds.

Disney has five moderate resorts; Disney’s Caribbean Beach Resort, Port Orleans Resort- Riverside and French Quarter, Disney’s Coronado Springs Resort and The Cabins at Fort Wilderness. Each comes with a different theme and will offer an array of different aspects for families.

1. Staying at Disney’s Caribbean Beach Resort will put you in the middle of the Caribbean Islands. This is one of Disney’s largest resorts so I would recommend upgrading to a preferred room with close proximity to the main pool, lobby and dining. You’ll find an elaborate splash park for your younger children to play in and a water slide for your older children to enjoy at their pool. Make sure you check out their playground, it’s one of the best compared to any of the other Disney resorts! After a huge two-year refurbishment to their main lobby as well as adding in new restaurants, this may be a great option for your family.

2. Disney’s Port Orleans Resort is actually broken into two smaller resorts; Port Orleans French Quarter which will put you in the center of 19th Century New Orleans and Port Orleans Riverside which boasts the feel of a Louisiana plantation, a bayou-side retreat. While most of the moderate resorts are quite large, Port Orleans is the smallest of them and allows you to utilize both sides of the resort. If you have a princess fan, a Royal Guest Room at Disney’s Port Orleans Riverside is a must!

3. Want the feel of a Mexican retreat without having to leave the US? Plan on calling Disney’s Coronado Springs home for your Disney vacation. With recently renovated guest rooms, an Aztec-themed pool and one of the best playgrounds at Disney which comes complete with huge sandboxes there is certainly something here to please every member of the family!

4. If you have a larger family or are just looking for more room, consider The Cabins at Fort Wilderness. While these will be your most expensive of the moderate level resorts, the cabins are the largest standard option in Disney World and will come with a separate sleeping area featuring a queen-size bed and bunk beds; as well as a sleeper sofa in the living room.  It’s a different experience than a regular resort room as each cabin has its own deck and barbecue grill outside. If you’re a fan of camping or really want to enjoy nature, this resort is for you!

No matter which Disney moderate resort you decide on you’ll certainly enjoy all the amenities they boast!
