Since becoming a parent, I’ve really enjoyed ramping up our holiday celebrations. There’s something contagious about the excitement kids get, and holidays are a wonderful excuse to make an otherwise ordinary day, something special. The next holiday on the calendar is St. Patrick’s Day, and this year we’re pulling out all of the stops. Our library has books about hunting for leprechauns, and the magic of rainbows but I wanted to dive deep into Irish folklore this year. I was hoping to find a book that could bring a deeper meaning to St. Patrick’s day and ‘Fiona’s Luck’ was the perfect book to do just that. In the story, the Irish countryside was once full of luck, but the greedy leprechauns locked it all away. With all their luck gone the people find their crops producing no potatoes, and their chickens laying no eggs. Fiona knows if she wants to help her town she’ll need to use her smarts to win back the luck. We’ll be enjoying rainbow stickers, gold coin candy and corned beef for March 17th, but thanks to ‘Fiona’s Luck’, we’ll also be talking about the luck of the Irish.
