A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood: The Poetry of Mister Rogers
Did you know April is National Poetry Month? Me neither, but thanks to the trusty Google machine I discovered this fact and then immediately went on a hunt for a children’s poetry book to share. Quite some time ago, I decided that poems would be perfect for reading out loud while my daughter played. I liked the idea of short-form stories that could fill the air while she built towers and solved puzzles. I started my journey to find a poetry book we could love and sadly found a few different titles that we checked out of the library and returned barely read. We just couldn’t find any that we both loved. When I heard that the song lyrics of Mister Rogers were being turned into a book of poetry, I knew the search was over! Finally a book we could both learn something from. ‘A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood’ lived up to the hype once I got my hands on it the day of its release March 19th. (Yes, I was that eager to own this book!) The illustrator, Luke Flowers did a wonderful job capturing the words of an icon and bringing them to life with bright colors and sweet images. My daughter has loved hearing these poems, and I’ve loved the lessons. As the opening page reads, “My name is Mister Rogers. I’m glad that you’re near. You’ve made this day a special one by just your being here.”
