Book Review: We’re going on an Egg Hunt

At the library recently I grabbed a few different books about Easter thinking the stories could help add to the hype of the impending holiday. What I didn’t anticipate was that my daughter would love this book so much that I would find her sleeping with it on her pillow, discover it missing from my pile of books to photograph and that there would be tears the night I asked if we should try another book. I’m not sure if it’s the flaps she gets to lift as she hunts for eggs, or if it’s the big surprise hiding behind egg #10 but ‘We’re going on an Egg Hunt’, by Laura Hughes (illustrator), is a home run. The story is simple, a family of bunnies is walking through the farm collecting eggs. Along the way, they encounter obstacles that they can’t go over, under or around so they’ll have to go through them. It’s a rhyming prose that’s familiar to anyone who has read, ‘We’re going on a Bear Hunt’. In this story, though there are fun flaps to lift along the way. Are there eggs behind those flaps? Farm friends or maybe something else? Our copy has made its way back to the library shelves but I heard a rumor a special request letter was sent to the Easter Bunny. I hope he can come through in the end because this was one book we hated to return.
