Book Review: Emily

If it wasn’t obvious by my previous book picks of ‘Roxaboxen’ and ‘Katy and the Big Snow’, I love a good story based on a time period long ago and full of classic illustrations. The book, ‘Emily’ fits the bill. This story is based on the later life of Emily Dickinson as told by her little girl neighbor. We often think of Emily Dickinson as a strong poetic voice bringing prose to everyday emotions and credence to female storytelling. In her later life, Ms. Dickinson was a recluse, barely leaving her house and rarely seen by her neighbors. This quaint story about reaching out to our neighbors can also be a wonderful catalyst for breaking out the poetry books and reading a bit from one of America’s most recognizable poets. It’s never too early (or too late!) to learn a new appreciation for poetry.
