Meet Laura Sandberg from Let Laura

By Anu Kapur, Publisher, Lower Manhattan Macaroni Kid September 14, 2020

Laura, please tell us a little about yourself. Where are you originally from?

I grew up in Huntington, Long Island. I consider myself a true New Yorker as my home has been NYC for the past 13+ years! I grew up a water baby and love waterskiing, the beach and spending time with my friends and family. I love to travel (I studied abroad in Florence, Italy) and fell in love with learning about different cultures, meeting new people and eating delicious food.

When did you start Let Laura? How long have you been a professional organizer?

I officially started Let Laura in 2013 when I discovered Professional Organizing was an actual profession.

Unofficially, I have been organizing my whole life. My mom loves to tell the story of when I was two. I had pulled everything out of my baby brother’s changing table. When she asked what I was doing, I turned around and looked at her like she had eight heads and said, “I’m organizing.” Growing my business has been a great journey, I am grateful to be able to do what I love.

How did you get into this profession? Do you have a team?

Friends and family kept asking me to help them get organized or help them unpack in their new apartment. I was always so excited to help. From the beginning, I have always been a problem solver – my friends and family saw a space that wouldn’t work for their needs and would give up! I saw the space and created solutions so it would work and look great too!

Every project is important to me and I am always super involved before, during and after, which is why my team currently consists of me and three other organizers.

What type of clients do you work with? What is your organizing style?

My client is just like me, a busy mom with a job (or hobby) she loves and is looking for space-saving solutions for the things that are important to them and their families. This is why I have created a WHOLE•istic approach to organizing which creates functional, intuitive solutions that transform not only your space but also your life.

W - Where do you feel overwhelmed in your home and ARE in need of some space?

H - How do you want the space to feel?

O - Optimize the space you have to get the MOST OUT OF YOUR SPACE.

L - Let go of what no longer serves you and create sustainable systems that do.

E - Enjoy the freedom the NEW NORMAL we have created brings.

It is important for me to create sustainable solutions that my clients can maintain on their own. My mission is to help you create purposeful places for the important things in your life and feel great in your space.

What are the different services do you offer?

The services we offer at Let Laura are designed to help you create the space you crave. From managing your move and seamlessly unpacking you, to creating space for a second (or third!) baby, to optimizing your storage and organizational space while creating practical and pretty solutions. I am all about taking my clients from feeling overwhelmed to feeling at peace. With so many of us working and schooling from home, our spaces need to function a little differently and I love creating the transformation clients are seeking to make your space work for your life.

How do you approach a new organizing project?

All of my projects start with a strategy call. Setting goals for your space is the key to our success in getting you to the life you love. I will put a plan in place to get the space organized and the most important piece is creating a functional organizing system customized to your needs. The client has the tools needed to easily maintain the results we have created. I love getting pictures from my clients months after we have worked together showing me their sustained organizing systems we created!

My many years of experience allow me to tap into resources and systems that I know work.

When working with clients, what do you think are the biggest hindrances that keep people from being/staying organized?

Clutter and disorganization drain your energy and creativity. It is sometimes easier for people to get used to living in the space as is and without proper support, making a lifestyle change can seem daunting. I get it! I have a 3.5-year-old daughter and work full time – life is busy. I do have spectacular and easy to maintain organizing systems – and this is the difference between staying organized and living in constant chaos.

What is your approach with a client who resists decluttering?

Patience, no pressure, no judgment. I am a firm believer and I am super respectful of never pressuring anyone to let go of something they are not ready to. I believe in getting to the root of why an object is so important to someone. Sometimes we have an emotional attachment to objects that make no sense for our current space and lives. My aim is to ensure you keep that wonderful emotional feeling while streamlining your physical space. I also find that clients are more open to parting with items if they know the items are going to a good second home. My clients will tell you I am passionate and strategic with my partnerships about donating items to their ideal second home.

One of my favorite stories to share is from a client who admitted that a statue she wanted to keep was hideous looking! After some gentle questioning, we got to the root of why it was so important to her – because her mom gave it to her! Our solution: we framed a beautiful photo of her mother in her dressing room so she could look at it every morning while she was getting ready instead of hiding an ugly statue in her drawer.

What is the most common question you are asked?

Is my space the worst space you have ever seen?! I don’t judge you, your space or your belongings. I’m here to support you and empower you to succeed! I know that letting people into your home can be a really hard thing – opening up your space and asking for help are vulnerable positions to be in. I get it, I am going to show up as your space solving expert and hold your hand throughout the process and push you when you need to be pushed. I am my client – I feel you, and I’ve got you covered. I, of course, hold the highest level of confidentiality for my clients and their projects.

What are your top three tips for staying organized?

Keep it simple, complicated systems will never stay organized.

Make sure everything has a home and that you have room to grow (where appropriate). If you have a home for everything and no room to grow, that organizing system will never be functional and sustainable.

Ask for help – humans are not meant to do everything! Outsourcing can be your best friend.

What is the favorite part of your job?

I love that every project and space is different. I love that I get to be creative and empower you to make your lifestyle and physical space more efficient, less chaotic and overall better. I love seeing happy clients who have gone from anxious to relaxed in their home. Hearing from old clients and working with them on a refresh is always fun and rewarding too!

What do you like to do when you’re not working?

When I’m not solving space challenges or alleviating the stress of the moving process for clients, I am hanging out with my hubby and daughter, traveling the world (I’ve been to 42 countries and counting!), playing at the water’s edge or cooking up something delicious at home.
