How to Choose Color Corrector

By Sara Niec Carnahan, Founder, Sara N.C. Beauty September 29, 2020

Last week we went over color correctors and concealers, so now that you've mastered the basics let’s dive in a little deeper and try something more advanced. Learning how to make your life a little bit easier and tackle some of the issues you might be struggling with.

The colors we commonly try to conceal are:

  • Dark under-eye circles: purple-blue shade most common under our eyes and in the corners of our eyes
  • Redness such as broken capillaries, scars, sun damage, and blemishes.
  • Dark brown age spots, sun spots, and pigmentation
  • Dull and sallow complexion
  • Bad tan or orange self-tanner

Dark under-eye circles:

Because dark circles are not a universal color, let me explain the variety of colors that you could use. Some people have dark circles that look more purple and others bluer.  Salmon / Peach / Orange Color Corrector - are used to counteract the undereye darkness. The under-eye area has fragile skin, and normally dark circles have a tinge of blue or purple undertones. By applying these peachy or orangey color on them will take away the blue/purple tinge. These are by far the most used corrector. Following these guidelines for choosing the correct shade: the fairer your completion is the lighter shade of peach/orange you should pick. For example, very fair-skinned people should choose a salmon color, medium color skin should choose a peachy color, and darker or wheat-ish complexion beauties should choose an orange color corrector.

Redness, Acne, and Rosacea:

Green Color Corrector is the second most important corrector and your best buddy when it comes to concealing red spots, rosacea, and inflamed pimples. A little goes a long way, and that is always a good rule to follow. Just apply the tiniest amount on top of the acne and blend it with a patting motion, then cover it with a flesh-colored concealer or the foundation, depending on the coverage you need. If you are prone to redness all over your face, find a primer or CC cream with a green tint!

Dark brown age spots, sun spots and bruises, and broken veins:

Yellow Color Corrector is very versatile. You can use it to cover brown pigmentation on the skin like hyperpigmentation, age spots, and sunspots. As well as purple and green bruises or even green tattoos.

Dull and sallow complexion:

Sallow skin = skin that has lost its natural complexion, appears yellow or brown, or “sickly” yellowish tone to your skin. Purple / Lavender Color Correctors are great for combatting yellow undertones and brightening skin. Use a purple primer to remove yellow tones from your entire face or use a spot concealer to hide yellow spots.

Bad tan or orange self-tanner:

Blue Color Correctors are used to counteract orange tints in the skin and reduce fake tan disasters. Or maybe the color is ok but the application was patchy and now some parts of your skin are darker than others? Stop panicking and use a little blue concealer on the affected areas instead. And it goes without saying that if you spent too much time in the sun and got a bad tan, you can still use blue concealer to reduce its appearance.

Stay tuned for next week, how to apply the corrector and concealer.
