How to Bronze

By Sara Niec Carnahan, Founder, Sara N.C. Beauty October 26, 2020

Real quick, let's refresh ourselves on the real purpose of using bronzer in the first place. Bronzer is all about making the skin look healthier, which means you're not trying to give your face a fake tan, but simply trying to warm it up. So how or where should Bronzer be applied? Bronzer should be applied to areas where the sun hits your skin the most and where you tan the darkest. These are typically the cheekbones, temples, and the bridge of your nose. Let's break this down further….

Building color up gradually is the best way to avoid the beginner's mistake of over-applying. Bronzer should give your skin a sun-kissed flush, so apply to areas of the face where the light would shine if it were directly above - where your forehead meets your hairline, the bridge of your nose, the tip of your chin, and the apples of cheeks.

STEP 1: Select the Right Shade

Just as you shouldn’t use bronzer to contour, you won’t want to use a contour product to bronze, as it may make your makeup look too heavy. You’ll also want to avoid bronzers that are extremely warm, as they can end up looking orange on your skin. For a shade that will look natural, look for a bronzer with a neutral undertone.

DON'T: Use a Shade that's Too Dark

A color that's overly deep for your skin tone can make your complexion look muddy and unnatural, not sun-kissed. Instead, follow the rule of two: Choose a bronzer hue that's no more than two shades darker than your skin tone. Hold the compact directly up to your skin to gauge color.

STEP 2: Apply in “3” Shapes

Bonzer shouldn’t be swept over your entire face. Instead, use the “3” technique to apply bronzer. Dip a big, fluffy brush into a powder bronzer, then apply it in a three-shape along the side of your face, hitting the sides of your forehead, cheekbones, and jawline. Doing this technique offers a more natural-looking finish because those are the areas the sun usually highlights.

STEP 3: Don’t Forget Your Neck

Not applying bronzer to your neck can often make it look like your face doesn’t match your body. Before you put away your bronzer, apply it down the sides of your neck, too. Make sure to check out the final look in natural lighting! If the bronzer looks too dark, or was applied too heavily, use a clean powder brush (one with densely packed hair) to pick up and blend out the excess product, rubbing the brush in small circular motions. Double-check to make sure there are no hard edges, and if there are, blend them out using a slightly dampened makeup sponge. If you opt for a bronzer with shimmer, double-check how it looks in natural, direct lighting. This is especially true if you have oily skin because the shimmer makes oily skin look even shinier. Many people prefer a little glimmer in their faux glow, so it's good to test it and see how shiny the finish is before you head out. Too shiny doesn't look as natural, but for a night out, the look can be stunning.
