Meet Sasha Erwitt from Sasha Erwitt Photography

NYC Photographer

By Anu Kapur, Publisher, Lower Manhattan Macaroni Kid November 16, 2020

Sasha, please tell us a little about yourself. Are you a native New Yorker?

Yes, I am! I was born in Manhattan and raised between there and East Hampton.

When did you first realize you were interested in photography? Do you have any formal training in photography?

My dad is a well-known photographer, Elliott Erwitt, so I’ve always been around and interested in photography. I worked in a darkroom throughout high school and then majored in Art history in college.

How long have you been a photographer? What is your favorite thing about being a photographer?

I’ve worked in the world of editorial photography since graduating college - as a photo editor and then photo director of several magazines including Vanity Fair and Town & Country. It’s been four years since I left the magazine world to focus on my own photography full time. I love connecting with people and reflecting back on the sweet and funny moments that I observe.

How do you make your clients feel relaxed?

I don’t have any specific gimmicks or tricks - I try to be my authentic self - curious and empathetic - I find this to be the best way to keep things real and not too awkward.

What type of photography sessions do you offer? What style(s) do you specialize in?

I love photographing weddings - modern and quirky ones especially - but since Covid, I’ve rediscovered my love for family photos and branding sessions - safe and socially distanced.

Do you advise your clients on what to wear for the photoshoot?

I think it’s most important to wear clothes that you feel comfortable and confident in - as opposed to certain colors or patterns or matchy themes. Especially for kids. If they’re miserable in a collared shirt, no need to force that. If they live in a particular Spider-Man shirt, you’ll be glad to have that documented in the future. Sometimes a person can feel more comfortable and confident with a special new outfit, and in that case, I say go for it.

What is your favorite photo location in New York City?

I love locations that are personal to the subjects. Normally, I love shooting in and around people's homes - since Covid I’m shooting only outside so I like to talk it over and see if there is a particular park or street or cafe that has meaning. I can shoot (almost) anywhere.

For an outdoor shoot, which is your favorite season to take pictures and why?

I love them all for different reasons - fall season is my busiest but I think it’s worthwhile to consider photos all year round so nothing looks too dated/seasonal.

How do you like to spend your free time?

Cooking, watching comedies with my kids + husband, completing the NYT crossword and spelling bee daily, and reading.

What tips or advice do you have for aspiring photographers?

My advice would be to stay true to your instincts and the kind of work that makes you excited and passionate so that your work stands out and isn’t generic.

What is the best way to contact you?

Email is best. You could also reach me on my website and on Instagram.

Thanks!
