Book Review: 20th Century Children’s Poetry Treasury

Recommended Ages: Preschool - 3 grade

I’m going to be completely honest when I tell you that at this time last year, I couldn’t find a single poetry book to share with my daughter that was of any interest to her. I knew the problem had to have been in my ability to find the right book. I vowed to leave no stone unturned until we found the perfect book. I can’t say that this is the ‘one’ we were looking for, but only because it’s now one of our many favorites. Turns out there are tons of amazing poetry books for children out there, you just have to locate the one whose illustrations and poem selection speak to you the loudest. The ‘20th Century Children’s Poetry Treasury’ is the one that we have loved the most last year. Whenever we find a topic of interest, I know I can flip through the pages and will find a related poem. There are poems about alligators and neighbors, helicopters and dragons. Combined with fun illustrations, this is the poetry book we come back to time and time again. For us, poetry has been best shared over a mug of tea. I keep thinking what a sweet gift it would make, this treasury paired with a tea set. Together they’d be a match made in poetry-loving heaven.
