Top 9 Holiday Books For Kids

By Kayla Rochelle February 7, 2024

It’s the most wonderful time of the year! The Christmas season has officially arrived and with it comes a whole slew of amazing children’s books. I’m eager to share nine books this year that we are loving this holiday season.

Bear Stays Up For Christmas

Author: Karma Wilson & Jane Chapman

This book series is all about a Bear, his friends and how important acts of kindness towards each other are. It’s hard to stay awake for Christmas when you’re a hibernating animal. Thank goodness for a few good friends.

When Santa was a Baby

Author: Linda Bailey & Genevieve Godbout

Have you ever stopped to wonder, just what was Santa like as a baby? This sweet book is all about a young boy with a grand idea (and it features the likeness of the most appropriate looking parents).

Mr. Willowby's Christmas Tree

Author: Robert Barry

When you live in a grand house, you get a grand Christmas Tree and that’s exactly what Mr. Willowby does. When his tree is just a little too tall he has the top chopped off, which will make the perfect Christmas tree for the next family. When their tree is just a little too tall they chop the top off. The tree keeps going and going making the most perfect Christmas tree for so many homes.

A World of Cookies for Santa: Follow Santa's Tasty Trip Around the World

Author: M.E. Furman

Illustrated by: Susan Gal

Take a tour through the world, seeing how various countries celebrate Christmas and what special treats they leave out for their gift giver. This book even includes some recipes in the back! It’s such a fun read for every little holiday baking lover.

The Tree That's Meant to Be

Author: Yuval Zommer

Not every tree gets chosen to stand proudly in homes for the holiday but luckily even woodland creatures love having a tree of their very own. Another book of gorgeous and fun illustrations from Yuval Zommer.

Christmas Farm

Author: Mary Lyn Ray

Illustrated by: Barry Root

Running a Christmas Tree farm involves lots of planning and caretaking, and it’s something that two (multi-generational) neighbors are ready to learn all about together. This book focuses more on the growth of trees than on the final plans for them and sprinkled some math along the way.

Comet the Unstoppable Reindeer

Author: Jim Benton

We were only a few pages in when I had to take a break from reading because I was laughing out loud, this book is a hoot. When Comet is sidelined on the big night due to a broken arm he finds himself the only one who can save Christmas. Though not without some bumps, bruises, and possibly a hernia in the process.

The Story of Holly & Ivy

Author: Rumer Godden

Illustrated by: Barbara Cooney

This book is what I would consider a traditional Christmas tale. A lonely toy and an orphan girl cross paths providing the perfect backdrop for a Christmas miracle. This book is more long-form and is perfect for snuggling together on the couch and reading on Christmas Eve.

The Year of the Perfect Christmas Tree

Author: Gloria Houston

Illustrated by: Barbara Cooney

A little girl is so excited to be the chosen family who gets to provide the Christmas Tree for the Christmas Eve service this year. She and her father carefully select the most perfect tree in the mountains early in the spring. But when her father is sent off to war, the holiday season starts to look a little different than she had originally hoped.
