Practicing Gratitude

Around the time I was typing my previous article on gratefulness, this happened.

Halfway across the world, my best friend met with an accident - on a walk with her family, on a path they’ve taken hundreds of times. The injuries kept her in the ICU for a week. Last week, we spoke once she got home. 

This week, I want to elaborate on gratefulness. I want to give you a personal example.

She was angry that I wasn’t there with her when she needed me to be. 

She knows, she can yell as much as she wants, she can be as rude as her medications influence her. She knows I will always be there. She knows I won’t judge. And for that - I am eternally grateful. 

Throughout our call, all I wanted to do was hold her. I couldn’t. I wanted to tell her it’ll be okay, she’ll be back better than before and I did... but it still wasn’t the same as talking to her in person. Anything and everything I wanted to say, I did but it didn’t feel enough. However, I am grateful for that call, for her anger, for my failed reassurances, for everything because I know, I am a good friend to her as she has been to me. 

The highlight though for me was, we ended the conversation by me saying, “It was a freak accident, don’t give it any more energy than you already have." She understood, agreed and continued my spiel for me, “...it doesn’t deserve it, focus on getting better, focus all your energy on recovering, be aware of where you are using the little energy you have right now. Then she told me she wanted to read how grateful I was in my next article.” 

And you know what I am going to say - I am grateful for her sense of humor even in this stressful time! Our call began with tears and ended with laughter.

My heart is full. I hope yours is too!   

Choosing to be positive and having a grateful attitude is going to determine how you are going to live your life.
