How to Pull Off A Blue Eye Liner

By Sara Niec Carnahan, Founder, Sara N.C. Beauty May 18, 2021

Colored liners are very popular, but let’s be honest, the thought of adding blue pencil to your eye can give you flashbacks to the 90s. I got you covered! Let’s go thru it together.

Eye makeup colors in vibrant shades like peach, neon green, vibrant pink, and varying shades of blue are trending for the summer season. Whether your go-to liner look is a sharp cat eye, a smoky grunge look, or a retro baby wing, this color can work for you!

Finding the Perfect, Long Lasting Eye Liner

You might think that a blue liner isn’t for you, and I get it – trying new things can be scary, especially with beauty. Just remember: it all washes off at the end of the day, and who knows, maybe you’ll discover a new favorite look!

My favorite is Navy Eyesense from SeneGence. This eyeliner is sure to become your newest obsession, with a silky feel that glides across the skin like butter. This is a vegan liner (yay!) with enriched ingredients that support skin and lash health. Not only it looks good but it is smudge-proof. Once its sets it will not move until you are ready to take it off. Deep Navy goes with every eye color. It can help give your eyes amazing definition or subtle sexiness with smokier looks.

How to Apply Pencil Liner: Best Practices

  • Always start with moisturized skin – this includes your eye area! My go-to is Senegence Eye creme.
  • For applying, you have two options: apply directly to your eyelid or use a liner brush to achieve your desired look.
  • Application is so easy. Thanks to the amazing formula you don’t need any primer like with traditional pencils. I would recommend setting your liner with either a Translucent Powder which prevents the liner from getting greasy and smearing throughout the day, and also creates a mattified look. However, with EyeSense you can skip this step altogether.

Blue Eye Liner 3 Ways

1. How to apply a graphic eyeliner look

  • Apply your liner directly to the lid in a straight sweeping motion from the inner to outer corner.
  • Retouch any skin peeking through behind the lash line until you've achieved your desired color intensity.
  • Apply the pencil in your upper waterline to make your lashes look fuller. This pencil will not smudge even from your waterline.

2. How to apply a winged eyeliner look

  • Following the steps above, extend the line outwards following the angle of your lower eyelid, upwards toward the tail of your brow.
  • Get a razor-sharp edge with either a wipe, a straight liner brush and a little make-up remover, or a Q-tip.

3. How to apply a smokey eyeliner look

  • Start off with the graphic liner steps small dense makeup brush or Q-tip to smudge out the liner. First, use your tool with no product. When the edges are properly blended out, apply some of the liner directly onto the tip of your tool and press that as close to the lash line as possible, for a smokey, gradient effect.

There is no right or wrong way. These are just steps to help you feel more comfortable and try new things. The key to all makeup applications is blending. If the look is not quite as you like keep blending and don’t judge until you have your mascara on. Trust me it will all come together. Have fun!
