Best Nude Lipsticks and Lip Glosses For Your Skin Tone

By Sara Niec Carnahan, Founder, Sara N.C. Beauty May 11, 2022

Finding the perfect nude lip color can harder than it sounds. Too dark, and you look like you're trying to make brown lipstick happen, and not in a cool '90s way. Too light, and you start to resemble the living dead, with any warmth or color drained from your face. However, if you manage to nail the right nude lipstick shade for your skin tone. Nude lip color is a staple that every woman should have in her makeup arsenal. Versatile and classic can take you from day to night with ease. It can create a fresh-faced glow whilst making you appear subtly polished yet not overdone. Whether you pair your nude lips with gloss or with one coat of mascara or a full, smoky eye, it will make your eyes appear lighter and brighter. The only trick is finding the perfect nude lipsticks and lip glosses to match your skin tone.

If chosen and applied correctly, nude color has the unique ability to always feel chic - like how the perfect red lipstick simply always screams glamour. In short, you need to find your perfect nude lipstick pronto.

TIP: To find the perfect nude lipstick, you need to consider your skin tone and undertone. Make sure you know if your complexion is cool, warm, or neutral to help find your most complementary shade.

Alabaster skin tone

If you have fair and milky skin tone try a soft, dusty baby pink. If you go too beige, you might look washed out and start resembling a corpse! Avoid super opaque, flat nudes and try a sheerer formula instead.

Fair skin

Grab a rosy-beige nude color. When you look at nude lipsticks in fashion magazines, the skin matches the lips. This doesn't translate well into real life - you want warmth and separation between the lips and the skin.

Light skin

For light-skinned ladies with slight olive undertones, try a warmer nude shade. You can definitely go pink, and you can definitely go beige. You want more pigment in your nude lipstick than someone who is alabaster or fair with pink undertones.

Warm olive skin

Ladies with warmer olive skin tones look for a caramel-tone, beige color that's darker than the shade of your skin. Try finding a glossier formula to play up the warmth of your skin tone.

Cool Olive Skin

With an olive skin tone, you have a lot more versatility. You can go with a darker nude, or a lighter nude so your lips don’t disappear. Grab a sheer, pink-tinted lip color.

Tan skin

If you have lighter hair and skin, add an "anchor" to your look with smokier, more defined eye makeup. For ladies with tan skin (real or faux), should grab a glossy, shimmery nude to bring out the sun-kissed look of your skin.

Medium Skin

The slight pinkness of a nude lipstick adds separation between lip color and skin tone. Try for a pink-toned nude shade that's lighter than your skin tone.

Caramel Skin

A warm nude is the ideal balance between beige and caramel and perfectly complements the skin tone. Beige nudes with hints of pink. Also, avoid nudes with yellow base tones if you have a Mediterranean complexion as it will clash with your skin.

Moca Skin

Gloss can add the perfect radiant pop for darker lip tones whilst flecks of gold will compliment your complexion flawlessly. Nude pout a rosy-pink mauve with gold flecks, or a caramel rose with silver flecks.

Dark Skin

Bronze, shimmery nude color is ideal for women of color, it's all about playing with highlights and shadows to build definition. Pick a nude shade lighter than your actual skin tone to brighten the face and sticking to a gloss formula for a more natural-looking effect. Darker complexions look glowing and perfect with warmer nude tones. Shades such as metallic brown, warm caramel, rose gold and rich berry, lift and brighten looks whilst still appearing natural.
