Book Review: Rocket Says Clean Up!

By Amanda Elshahawi, Creator, Enchanted Literacy July 30, 2024

As summer days are often spent splashing in the water, I wanted to share a recent favorite picture book that devotes its plot to inspiring children to keep the beaches clean!

"Rocket Says Clean Up!

Written by Nathan Bryon

Illustrated by Dapo Adeola

Recommended ages 4-8 years

This is the second in a series featuring an energizing young girl named Rocket.

On holiday, Rocket and family visit her grandparents in Jamaica. Just like herself, Grammy and Grampy are two of the coolest relatives you could have, living in an animal sanctuary and always ready to go surfing.

While building sandcastles, they spy a turtle who is tangled up in plastic. Observing the rest of the beach, she sees it covered in plastic and trash. Rocket makes it her mission to educate and motivate others to help clean up! Coming together the community cleans their ocean shore and creates art in the process.

Between the vibrant illustrations and ocean facts scattered throughout the pages, this book is perfect for budding environmentalists and ocean lovers. The readers are also given examples of how they can make a difference to keep the ocean clean and resources for more information!

Pro tip: Children three and under are free, four and up receive a discount price! We also paired this book with ocean-themed sensory play that accounted for daily learning and entertainment that you can check out here.

Amanda is a preschool teacher, mother and avid Central Park picnicker. She values community and is an advocate for families in the foster care system. One day she hopes to publish a children's book of her own. In the meantime, you can follow her Instagram, Enchanted Literacy, which encourages imagination and passion for reading.
