As summer is ending we have begun to put our fall schedule together. The new school season brings lots of change and opportunities for growth. It is an exciting time seeing my little one meet new friends, try new things and take more leaps into her independence. We found this book on one of our walks through a local bookstore and instantly fell in love with it, captivated by the unique illustrations and the encouraging message. Mel Fell is the perfect book for kids and adults in this season of growth.
Mel, a spirited young kingfisher, takes an opportunity one day to test her wings and learn to fly. Despite her fear, she confidently jumps off the branch from where her siblings stand to watch, shouting, "See you soon!" However, instead of soaring towards the sky, she starts to fall!
On her journey down, we watch the inhabitants of the tree try to catch her. The readers are left holding their breath as they wait to see what will happen to Mel. She ends up splashing into the water below, and to our delight, she twirls and soars back into the air! Concluding with a triumphant return and encouraging hug from her proud mom.
This inspiring journey captures the reader’s attention through the simple and bright illustrations and unique use of the physicality of the book. Reading the story vertically helps give the illusion of Mel’s long fall, and as she turns to fly back in the air the book rotates giving you a shared experience of reversing the motion! Corey R. Tabor also puts in little treats for the reader with the neighbor’s exclamations and a storyline of a caught fish!
Mel will leave everyone smiling and ready to watch your own little ones test the strength of their wings!
