With warmer weather on us, I’m itching to see the trees blossom and watch Central Park transform into a burst of color. The air is fresh and it feels like a new day full of energy and potential, ready for playful activities. Where the winter air tends to draw me towards long epic stories settling me in for a cold night bundled in blankets, this spring wind is pushing me out the doors as it lifts my feet off the ground. Similar to the dragon we meet in our story, Georgie Grows a Dragon by Emma Lazell.

Georgie, a determined young girl with a green thumb, dreams about all the types of plants she would like to grow. When one morning she wakes up to discover that she has grown a dragon! As every good gardener does, Georgie tries to determine what her new dragon likes. Sun, new soil, water? After a few disastrous trials and errors, Georgie realizes that the dragon needs to be unpotted. Her new “plant” quickly becomes her new friend, but he soon desires to fly again.

A story full of imagination, friendship and sprinkles of silly, this book is a good addition to your spring book collection. Georgie now thinks she can grow dragons and lets her mind wonder what else she could grow. Georgie Grows A Dragon is great for 3-6-year-olds who will find humor in Georgie and the dragon's predicament. The illustrations are light and airy, full of color pairing beautifully with the artistic text. This leads to the perfect follow-up activity with your child. Have them imagine what they would like to grow. You can write a story about it, draw a picture, cut it out then glue it to a stick and put it in a plant pot, or make one with playdough.
